World Bank PNG Tourism Development Project

PNG Tourism Sector Development Project  
A project funded by the World Bank in Partnership with PNG New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority (PNGTPA) to deliver the PNG Tourism Sector Development Projects in targeted destinations. 

The Project Rationale  
The proposed Project will support the increased contribution of tourism to the local economies of targeted two provinces in PNG by implementing an integrated approach entailing infrastructure investment, tourism product development and diversification, urban regeneration, improved management of cultural heritage sites, handcrafts and skills development, and attracting private sector investment for tourism-related SMEs development. 

The Objective(s) of the Project 
The project development objective is to improve tourism services in targeted destinations. 

There are also high level objectives that are part of the project objective and which include; 
(i) Adoption and start execution of national tourism plan
(ii) Adoption and start execution of provincial tourism plans
(iii) Improved infrastructure services in a selected number of cultural and natural heritage sites based on sustainable site management plans. 
(iv) Number of community led initiatives. 
(v) Number of project beneficiaries

The Project activities are expected to benefit the residents, tourists and enterprises in two provinces. 

Project Components
There are three components of the project as follows; 
1. Institutional & Policy Frameworks 
         1.1 Strengthening the tourism and urban development framework 
         1.2 Strengthening provincial urban, cultural and community development frameworks 

2. Infrastructure & Community/Product Development 
         2.1 Upgrading tourism infrastructure and heritage sites in urban and rural centres
         2.2 Developing integrated and sustainable tourism destinations
3. Project Management 

Project implementation support, construction supervision and performance monitoring
