UNWTO to Support PNG Tourism
31 March 2017

During the first official visit of the UNWTO Secretary General Dr. Taleb Rifai to Papua New Guinea in March 2017, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the United Nations World Tourism Organisation and the PNG Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture to strengthen and further develop tourism in the country.

Dr. Taleb Rifai and Hon. Tobias Kulang, Minister for Tourism Arts and Culture were signatories to the MoU signed in Port Moresby.

The UNWTO support for tourism in Papua New Guinea will be substantial with a strong focus on the UN Sustainable Development Goals and its incorporation into the nation’s tourism master plan, policy development and capacity building for the hospitality industry.  The agreement drew inspiration from the celebration of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017.

The PNG Tourism Promotion Authority also facilitated the 11th UNWTO Asia-Pacific Executive Training Program and National Forum on Sustainable Tourism for Development sponsored by the UNWTO and the Government of South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.  The event brought in participants from 16 UN member-countries from the Asia-Pacific region.  Papua New Guinea also participated in the program.

In his speeches during the Forum and MOU signing Dr. Rifai encouraged members of the tourism industry present to continue promoting the colourful, beautiful and wonderful image of Papua New Guinea to the world in a positive light, especially for the APEC Summit in 2018.

Papua New Guinea has been a member of the UNWTO for over a decade and each year observes the United Nations World Tourism Day, September 27th through promotional events and awareness campaigns, especially the annual Lukim PNG Nau Tourism Expo.
