Accommodation Accreditation Scheme

Accommodation Categories

Established guidelines for minimum criteria and expectations for accreditation in the Scheme are captured in the following accommodation categories:


Category 1: Hotels
Hotels, apartment hotels, resorts and luxury lodges, providing accommodation with individual guest rooms and private bathrooms, licensed food and beverage operations, recreational and leisure facilities. 



Category 2: Self-catering Accommodation

Motels, apartment or villa complexes and holiday rentals, providing accommodation with individual guest rooms and private bathrooms, with self-contained kitchen and guest laundry facilities.  Towels and linen provided.  Usually serviced. 



Category 3: Guesthouses & Hosted
Guesthouses, lodges and Bed and Breakfast establishments, providing guest accommodation in a private hotel, house or on private property, with bathroom, toilet and laundry facilities usually for the exclusive use of guests but possibly shared with the hosts in some instances.  Usually serviced.  Meals usually prepared by and may, in th case of a Bed and Breakfast, be taken with the hosts.  Download pdf manual.



Category 4: Backpackers / Budget Accommodation

Backpackers and hostels providing a range of individual, dormitory or shared sleeping accommodation, with communal lounge, kitchen and dining facilities, communal toilet, bathroom and laundry facilities.  Partially serviced.  Guests may be responsible for their own catering and may provide their own bed linen.  Download pdf manual.



Category 5: Traditional and Informal Accommodation
Village guesthouses and basic eco-lodges, often in more remote locations, providing simpler forms of accommodation.  Breakfast is usually available, other meals by arrangement, with an emphasis on local food, culture and entertainment.  Download pdf manual.



Category 6: Trekker Accommodation
Campsites and trekker huts in remote locations.  Trekkers and hikers are responsible for their own meals, tents and bedding.  Toilets and shower facilities are communal.  Download pdf manual.
